SOWMYA KUMARAN is an accomplished and multifaceted artist who excels as a dancer, choreographer, vocalist, and educator. She is the founder and artistic director of Nrithya Sangeeth, a school dedicated to South Indian performing arts.

Holding a Master of Fine Arts in Bharatanatyam, Sowmya’s artistic foundation was shaped from a young age under the guidance of distinguished gurus including Jayalakshmi Arunachalam, Dr. Saraswathi of Vipanchee, and Bragha Bessell, with whom she continues advanced study in abhinaya.

As an educator, Sowmya balances rigorous practical training with a strong emphasis on the theoretical foundations of dance, inspiring dedication and discipline in her students. Her students have earned recognition in competitions across the United States and in Chennai, India. Her choreography is noted for seamlessly blending intricate and dynamic nritta with nuanced and emotionally expressive abhinaya.

Sowmya is the recipient of the Late Dr. Saraswathi Award presented by Vipanchee Natyalaya in recognition of her contributions to Indian performing arts. She has directed and performed in numerous dance productions alongside her students. A skilled Thirupugazh vocalist, she also teaches and performs with her sister as part of the Chicago Thirupugazh Anbargal.

Born into a family deeply rooted in the performing arts, Sowmya is the daughter of renowned Tamil stage artiste Kalaimamani Kathadi S. Ramamurthy, carrying forward a rich artistic legacy that continues to inspire and enrich the cultural community.
